Prejudices

So contentious is this subject (transsexualism) that beyond the myths are the prejudices.  These are often unfounded opinion based in anything but fact, and as such, become core values of those holding these opinions.  They are anything but new and can be applied in one form or another to almost any situation the speaker dislikes.

Personally, I fight this kind of ignorance, intolerance, prejudice and bigotry at every turn.  I realize I cant change people's feelings but perhaps I can give them pause to reflect.  I have on rare occasions been successful.  Most times my words are in vain. 

That said, no matter what the opinion my position is simply this;  You have NO right to judge me or anyone else unless you are willing to allow me to equally judge you and your opinions.  Your opinions are yours and yours alone and therefore relevant only to you.  That said, it is none of my business what you think of me or anyone else, so please, if you cant present a face of tolerance then please hide it or leave altogether.  Neither I nor anyone else in any minority needs your ridiculous and or twisted logic.  To express such feelings only shows you to be a fool; one who is insensitive, rude, often ignorant, and always unwanted.  Keep your bigotry to yourself.  If you are trying to learn, then ask and you will get intelligent, respectful, and informed replies.

The following quotes are from people expressing contrary views.  My comments are in (brackets).  I have corrected the huge number of spelling and grammatical mistakes.  (Only a couple of the comments were without them.)

The only people who truly need physical surgery are those whose reproductive systems are not one or the other. (This is describing an intersex condition and although related to transgender, is a different circumstance.  Surgical correction is usually covered by insurance.)

People who want reassignment are mentally ill; and they need psychiatric care and handling.  The doctors who perform such surgeries are nothing more than con artists, earning enormous incomes by taking advantage of people and the taxpayers.  (We go through years of psychiatric counselling.  Doctors are con artists?  The surgeons cannot perform the surgery without the approval of at least 2 psychiatrists or psychologists qualified in the field of transgender. The surgeons themselves are AMA or CMA qualified surgeons often with specialized fields such as OB/GYN, plastic/reconstructive surgeons or internists, and anything but con artists unless you view your own doctors as con artists too.  Still the best surgeons for this are in Asia, not North America.)

You cant buy happiness when you're so mentally ill you don't know what sex you should be. (Oh we know what sex we should be alright.  That is why surgical correction is necessary.  Someone who is mentally ill cannot get the surgery.)

These people need a psychologist not a sex change. (Psychologist, psychiatrist;  Doesn't matter to us.  We have to see at least two of them in order to transition.  Sex change?  No, sex alignment or correction would be more properly descriptive.  A friend commented that EVERY male in this world has a sex change during pregnancy due to hormone release that determines sex.)

The ULTIMATE INSANE ACT of a troubled human being.  Any Doctor or town laying claim to this orchestrated perversion preying on the weak minded for profit best prepare to feel the wrath of God. Evidence: Sodom & Gomorrah!  (Obvious religious intolerance and ignorance because nowhere in the Christian Bible is transgender mentioned.  Any religious references are twisted interpretation of man.  Weak minded?  I would be happy to sit down and debate with this speaker; assuming s/he would have the intelligence to keep up. I think I am probably more sane than many people; including many public and religious leaders.)

I've always felt sex change surgery to be very sad. Having known a man who changed to a ''woman'' and being a man myself I can assure you that once you have met one of these people, you can spot a transgendered person in a few minutes. (Oh really?  You are better than me and I am trans)  When they have had sex change surgery they are basically consigning themselves to a very lonely life. (And this is based on first hand personal knowledge of who?  Most transitioned people I know live full healthy lives.)  For starters they are permanently closing the door on having biological children. (Absolutely true for M2F's  I'm not sure why adoption isn't an option though)  They are also closing the door on most future sexual relationships. (Wrong.  Many transitioned people live in committed marriages either from before transition or after.)  Not to mention the fact that sex change surgery is cosmetic only, (Ignorance of the highest order.  It is not cosmetic in any way shape or form; well except to make things look anatomically correct.  It is actually reconstructive surgery.  That said I assume you are also against facelifts, breast augmentation or repair of damaged body parts.)  They cannot reroute the nerves in the genitals to the new "constructions" so they are giving up orgasms.  (ABSOLUTELY wrong.)  Of course, most of them are happier after the surgery - they have convinced themselves that it is what they need, and once it is completed there is no going backwards, which is a powerful incentive to continue to believe it was the right choice.  (Counselling before surgery approval is designed to eliminate these kinds of people from acquiring surgery.  Mistakes do happen; but rarely.  No one would willingly make this kind of change on a whim which is what the speaker is suggesting.)  But, in the long run it is much better for them to come to terms with their own homosexuality and establish a loving and long term relationship with another gay person, than to try to convince themselves that they aren't really gay, they are just born with the wrong equipment.  (This statement is absolutely laughable in its ignorance)

God will reject these people and send them to burn in hell! (Expect we will see you there!  Keep the coffee warm will you?)

SICK AND WRONG!!!! Unnatural... Just sick and WRONG!!! (Definitely being in the wrong body is sick and wrong; a joke of the most cruel order by nature.)

When you think about it, this is about basing your life and lifestyle on sex. I try not to judge but can't imagine a "nut" leading me anywhere!!  (A very judgmental statement in its own right.  this very statement is passing judgment about something you obviously know nothing.  My guess is you voted for G.W. Bush which makes you are being led by a real nutter of the highest order.)

I think it is a sick mentally ill type of endeavor to make money and fame on the part of a perverted doctor who probably cannot handle his gender. be happy you were born healthy in a way that a positive person knows and expects. a butchering of your sex organs is not the answer to any identity problems you may encounter. (Ahh more ignorance of opinion with no fact, no desire to learn and expand the mind.  Actually, most SRS surgeons are cisgendered.  If you were to dig deeper, you would know conclusively that the ONLY recognized solution to Gender Identity Disorder is surgery.  This is promoted by every medical and psychological body in the world.)

Another often heard complaint is that healthcare shouldn't pay for SRS.  It doesn't, and neither do insurance plans.  Any transsexual wanting SRS has to pay for it out of pocket.  Here is a rundown of the costs for transition.  (These costs are high estimates for procedures performed in North America.  They can be considerably less in Asia and often with better results.)
